Western Ukrainian Village Tour
The village of Starychi is located about 45 km west of Lviv and 20 km from the Polish border. Little has changed in the village itself over the last century when state borders shifted back and forth and the ruling powers changed from Austro-Hungary to Poland, Soviet Union, Germany, Soviet Union again and Ukraine. Starychi is located on the edge of the military training ground that is now often used by the NATO troops. It is also close to the sulfur mining area, once considered of vital importance for making gun powder for the Soviet Army. These days the sulfur quarries are getting filled with ground water, and recently plans were announced to turn the place into the water recreation area.

Western Ukrainian Village Tour
Visit this typical western Ukrainian village of Starychi and take a tour of a small farmstead that includes a barn, courtyard and a garden. Look around the authentic whitewashed cottage built by my grandfather in the 1930s in the traditional style of the period. You will see some of the tools used in traditional farming, learn about the multifunctional Ukrainian stove, see the potato storage and how grain was kept safe from mice. The village is accessed by a scenic forest road. Depending on the season, you will be welcome to try mushroom hunting and picking berries along the road on the way back to Lviv.
